Here’s How My Getaway Stay Fueled The Need For Consistent Rest & Relaxation

Getaway takes rest and relaxation to a whole different level.

I’ve always dreamt of taking advantage of all that a Getaway cabin has to offer, but much like everyone else in this world, I often fall victim to saying: “I’ll do it when the timing is right.”

Sometimes getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of life can keep you from truly living your life.

As an avid believer in the concept of divine timing, I can say that my recent trip to the cabins in Suches, Georgia is proof that it exists. This mini vacation could not have come at a better time.

When I moved to Atlanta in 2019, I never imagined that my career dreams would take off as quickly as they did, but God often laughs when we try to hop in the driver's seat to make plans for our lives. With my visions of becoming an established journalist slowly, but surely coming to fruition, so did the assignments, deadlines, interviews — and let’s not forget the social events on a consistent basis to stay in the know or at least at the front of folks’ minds. I’m all for incorporating a little “play” for a healthy work/life balance, but sometimes I can go a little overboard, seemingly forgetting that it’s okay to say “no” from time to time.

My weeks had become somewhat of a blur from trying to chase and jump at every opportunity that comes my way, because just in case I forgot to mention, this dream I’ve been chasing has been years in the making. For context, I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2015, and in full transparency, I have fallen victim to the fear of saying “no” and missing out on an opportunity (thank God for reminders that nothing that is meant for me will pass me by).

It wasn’t until this year, just shy of turning 30, that reality settled in and I realized that it is imperative to carve out time to be completely unplugged…especially working in an industry that is built on “always being in the know.”

With the desire to pencil in time for true rest… away from the social media updates and posts about all the fun places my profession often takes me, I found the perfect place for solace at the Getaway cabin. There is truly something powerful about being tucked away from civilization with nature as a backdrop and nothing but time and space to get immersed in all the things that bring me joy.

I started the day with a nice glass of wine, before graduating outside to start a fire to roast s’mores because what’s a true getaway without a good drink and something sweet to eat, right? The rest of the trip was like a dream. From getting lost in my latest read, Music Is History by Questlove, to experiencing the best naps a girl could ever have, this trip was one for the books. So much so, that I’ve made a promise to ensure that a Getaway stay is in the budget for each quarter going into the new year.

And to top it all off — two gray cats waved us goodbye as we set back off to the city. According to my research, seeing gray cats symbolizes “very positive characteristics such as independence, liberty, spiritual enlightenment, intuition, balance, and hope.”
